Paired synaptic neuropil domain of the adult brain located just caudal to the ellipsoid body and ventral to the fan-shaped body, on either side of the midline (Hanesch et al., 1989). There are three of these structures, stacked on top of each other from dorsal to ventral, and at least two can be further divided into compartments (Wolff et al., 2015; Wolff and Rubin, 2018). There is asymmetry between the noduli, with one set always lying slightly more anterior than the other (Ito et al., 2014).

Ito et al. (2014) state that there are four subunits of one nodulus per hemisphere, but Wolff et al. (2015) and Wolff and Rubin (2018) class the noduli as three distinct units and count 'subunit IV' as part of nodulus 3; here we follow the Wolff nomenclature.
